This project involved the design and construction of an air traffic control facility built for Airways, the Auckland International Airport Ltd property development arm.

The building is located on a brownfield site, outside of the airport ‘air side’ operations, and is part of their wider urban development scheme. The building has a high architectural finish to reflect this, including a New Zealand first; mirror-finished aluminium composite cladding.The biggest challenge was to deliver the technical aspect of this project – the building provides multiple functions through service coordination:

Data center/server farm. Secure facility with restricted access.

Above ground bunkers; Ability to run 24/7 operations in multiple emergency situations.

The day-to-day/day-out workplace. It is designed and manufactured to an importance level 4 rating:Meet 100% seismic structural flexibility of NBS. Withstanding up to 100 kg/m² of volcanic ash on the roof.

Seismically restrain building services to the ultimate limit of a seismic event.

With the above in mind, the design team created a multi-layered service package that was fully coordinated at the design level, developed in BIM.The design details in the buildable shop package were carried out through a series of BIM meetings between the construction team (main contractor and subcontractors) and the design team through a shared, collaborative BIM component.
