Auckland Zoo's Te Puna Café was created to modernize the food service to customers, and also opens up opportunities for the zoo to provide a high quality facility that can be hired for events. Built on a rocky outcrop above the central lake and overlooking high canopy habitats, it offers a unique viewpoint where visitors can watch orangutans and siamangs swing through an innovative network of aerial walkways.

Visitors to Te Puna can enjoy a large open area surrounded by full height glass panels with a perforated acoustic ceiling. Facilities include a large commercial kitchen, indoor and outdoor seating areas, toilets and changing facilities, as well as a storage area upstairs.
