CLIENT NAME:Auckland Unlimited
PROJECT VALUE:$53M
LOCATION:Mayoral Drive, Auckland CBD
COMPLETION DATE:November 2021
The Aotea Refurbishment was a unique and complex project begun in 2018, with DF Construction Services Limited as the main contractor. Consisting of both internal and external improvements, the project focuses on bringing it up to current standards by adding new surface finishes and improving the waterproofing elements of the building. Three levels of the lobby, including the bar, toilets, stairs and main access routes, were upgraded and handed back to the client in early 2019.
The interior lobby was extensively upgraded, featuring high-end finishes such as terrazzo, decorative aged metals and marble. Separate from the main theatre and lobby spaces, the convention wing was also renovated. These three large areas within the building were added to the scope of the project. NZ Strong successfully delivered these sectors within the original internal deadline.
The exterior renovation focused on new stainless-steel interlocking cladding, glazed balustrades and large balcony windows. This changed the overall appearance of the building while retaining the original geometric angles of the facade. Because the new stainless-steel façade was a completely custom design, it involved significant engineering, sampling and testing Order to meet architectural form and code requirements while providing a durable and build able system. Most of the external work was completed while events were being held at the center and although this meant construction was interrupted, it was essential for the continued operation of the Aotea Centre.
